Evaporative Cooling: Is it right for you?

Evaporative cooling works on the simple principle of evaporation. When water evaporates, the air around it is cooled. Evaporative coolers use a wicking filter to absorb water from a reservoir. Air is then passed over the water via a fan, then the cooler air is pushed into your home.

But is an evaporative cooler right for everyone?

Locations where the air is hot AND dry in the summertime are perfect for evaporative coolers. Even though they are sometimes referred to as “swamp coolers,” they really should not be used in a swamp! In areas where humidity is already high, the process of evaporation slows or even stops. This renders the effects of evaporative cooling null and void.

In areas where the air is dry, evaporative cooling can cool ambient temperatures by as much as 25 degrees Fahrenheit. There are other benefits to evaporative cooling: increased humidity levels keep skin hydrated, can ease allergy symptoms, can help with snoring, and keep precious wooden floors and musical instruments from drying or cracking.

Evaporative cooling is also cheaper to operate, using about a third less electricity to operate than traditional air conditioning. Some electrical companies even offer rebates for installing an evaporative cooler.

TIP: We will do more in-depth coverage of rebates during the first week of April, so stay tuned!

Do you have a workshop? A garage? A shed? Evaporative coolers are not only a great choice for homes, but for other buildings as well. They require a low initial investment, and they are cheaper to operate than traditional air conditioning systems. You can run it only as you need it. While running the evaporative cooler, it is necessary to keep a window or door open. Any sawdust or fumes from your favorite hobby can be cleared out of the work space quickly, replacing it with fresh, cool air.

Evaporative coolers save money, are energy efficient, and help improve comfort and health. Sounds great, right? The map below shows the areas where evaporative cooling is most effective. If you are in the lucky zones 1 through 3, please consider the benefits of evaporative cooling!
