Shut it Down

November 2, 2018

Summer held on tight this year, with oppressive heat carrying over into fall in many parts of the country.  The extended periods of heat led many homeowners with evaporative coolers to leave them running through the first full month of fall.  But now that the season has finally changed, it’s officially time to winterize your swamp cooler.  Here’s a quick run through of the steps you need to take to shut down your MasterCool evaporative cooler each fall.

First, make sure to disconnect and drain the water line.  You’ll want to blow out any extra water so it doesn’t freeze in the winter.  Remove the belt from the pulleys and store it in a cool, dry place.  It can be reused next year.  Drain any remaining water from the base of the cooler and sponge out the bottom.  Remember that this water could be rough on soil and plants due to the mineral content, so be sure to dispose of it elsewhere!

Next, sweep or wipe out the bottom of the cooler, then scrub the interior and exterior panels and the water tray.  Use a wire brush to remove any mineral buildup that may be present.  Look for any spots of bare metal and spray them with paint primer.  Once dry, treat with a rust preventative.  This is a very important step for preventing rust in your cooler.

Once these steps are complete, use a heavy canvas evaporative cooler cover to keep dust, dirt, and cold air out of the cooler during the winter.  Never use a plastic cover because condensation could form underneath, which will cause rust.  Finally, close off the vents in your home to prevent drafts.

We made a video to walk you through your swamp cooler winterization, because sometimes it’s easier when you can see the steps in action.   Watch it here: How to Winterize Your MasterCool Evaporative Cooler
