Is Your Cooler Covered?

September 26, 2018

One of the final steps of winterizing your swamp cooler is adding the cover on for the less-oppressive months of winter.  Where do you find cooler covers?  What size do you need for your cooler?  It can be confusing if you’re new to evaporative cooling.  We’re here to help you figure it out and knock one more thing off your to-do list!

The majority of residential side-draft and down-draft evaporative coolers rely on third-party covers as part of the winterization process.  These can be found in retail home improvement stores, as well as in various places online.  The main thing to remember about a swamp cooler cover is to get one that is not made from plastic.  A plastic cover will condensate and speed up the rust process for a cooler, and no one wants that!  The safer choice is to go with a canvas or weather-resistant cover.  There are many brands available, so you have options.  Just make sure to get the correct size cooler cover to fit your evaporative cooler.

The easiest way to size your cooler for a cover is to go off of your swamp cooler’s actual size.  Seems easy, but it’s true!  Most covers are manufactured to fit specific brands and models, so get a cover that corresponds with the true measurements of your evaporative cooler.

If you cool your home with a window evaporative cooler, your search is a little easier; many cooler manufacturers make hard plastic covers for the inside grille and the outer cabinet.  These are guaranteed to fit and keep out the drafts during the winter.

It’s a good idea to make a note of your evaporative cooler’s model, dimensions, and serial number, and record them in your manual.  Keep the manual in a safe place so you can use it as a reference.
