The Importance of Proper Cooler Shutdown

The long, hot summer is finally drawing to a close, and it’s time to put your evaporative cooler to rest until next spring. While there are fewer steps involved than in spring start-up, it’s still important that your shutdown maintenance is performed correctly in order to extend the life of your evaporative cooler.

First, shut off the water and disconnect the water line to your cooler. Disconnect the line from both ends, drain it and blow out the extra water, and store for next year, if you’re able. If you aren’t able to store the water line, leave it disconnected from the source so that no water will leak into the line. You should never leave the water on or let water into the lines while the unit is shut down for a long period of time. It could freeze during the winter and potentially damage both your cooler and your home.

Next, drain the water from the base of the cooler and sponge out any excess. Never leave water in an evaporative cooler. Stagnant water attracts bacteria and causes rust. Rust significantly shortens the lifespan of a cooler.

Once the base of the cooler is dry, clean any dirt and debris from the cooler. If rust is beginning to form, remove it with a wire brush. Touch up with a rust preventative paint where needed. A rubberized pan sealer can be used to extend the life of your cooler’s bottom pan. Don’t ignore rust; it is very corrosive and will eat through a cooler!

Remember to protect your investment with a sturdy evaporative cooler cover. Never use a plastic cover on a cooler, as it will condensate and rust out the cooler. There are many kinds of covers on the market made of canvas and other weatherproof fabrics. Make sure you buy the correct size for your cooler instead of oversizing; it should fit snugly. Install it securely to prevent drafts and protect your cooler.

Finally, close off and seal the vents to keep in the heat once the temperature drops.

Follow these steps to winterize your evaporative cooler, and it will make spring start-up that much easier! Still have questions? Our Customer Service Team is here to help! Give them a call at 800-643-8341. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 am -5:30 pm CST.
