Bigger is Not Always Better

Many people live by the motto that bigger is better. They upsize their meals, buy groceries in bulk, and often drive incredibly large vehicles. While it’s certainly okay to “go big or go home,” when you’re purchasing an evaporative cooler, going too big can actually be bad for your home.

Evaporative coolers are rated by cubic feet per minute, or CFM. CFMs determine the efficiency of a cooler when used in a house of certain square footage. To calculate CFM, first determine the square footage of the space you’d like to cool. Multiply this number by the height of your ceilings. Take the result and divide that number by two. The result is the CFM rating of the cooler you need for your home.

Here is an example for a 1,200 square foot house with 8-foot ceilings:

1,200 x 8 = 9,600

9,600 + 2 = 4,800 CFM

In this example, the homeowner would need an evaporative cooler with at least a 4,800 CFM rating.

So why can’t you use a larger cooler than what is actually needed for your home? Because bigger coolers create more humidity, and that humidity needs somewhere to go. Evaporative coolers work by constantly removing and replacing the air in a home. If the cooler is too big, it might create more humidity than the cooler can remove. This could cause the home to become extremely humid, thereby reducing the cooling. The excessive moisture created by a too-big cooler could also be damaging to your home and your furnishings.

We don’t recommend exceeding the properly sized cooler for your home, but if your home is located in an extremely dry climate, going a little higher could be acceptable. Before doing so, we recommend speaking to our Customer Service Team, who would be able to point out potential issues and make sure the cooler you’re considering will work with your square footage.

It’s always best to use the calculation to size your cooler correctly, then purchase the evaporative cooler with the CFM rating that matches your home’s needs. Have more questions?
