How to Clean the Internal Parts of Your Evaporative Cooler
This summer has been one for the record books, and you’ve probably had your evaporative cooler working overtime (while enjoying lower energy bills than your AC neighbors)! But fall is fast approaching and it will be time to shut down your cooler. Using this shutdown time for a deep cleaning will prevent build-up, help prevent rust, and add years to your hard-working cooler’s life. So what cleaning products are safe for your cooler? It’s important to know what is and is not acceptable for evaporative cooler cleaning, as some chemicals could actually damage your cooler.
Bleach is one of the most common household cleaning chemicals, but it is not a good choice for your swamp cooler. Bleach should never be used in an evaporative cooler as it can damage the pans and possibly void your warranty. We recommend a cleaning solution made from a mix of vinegar and water. Fill the cooler pan with this mixture, let it sit for an hour, then drain the mixture. Rinse until the vinegar dissipates. Soapy water is also acceptable to use to clean the inside of an evaporative cooler; it is non-corrosive and safe for the pan and panels. Make sure you perform a thorough cleaning and get it really clean.
Next, make sure you thoroughly dry your cooler. Sponge out excess water, and don’t forget the corners. Be sure to check for any rust that may be forming and treat it, if necessary. Use a wire brush to loosen any mineral build-up that may be present.
We’re often asked about canned air. Canned air is a great option for cleaning dust from the fans on window evaporative coolers and portable evaporative coolers. It can also be used to clean the blower wheel of an evaporative cooler, and other tight spaces that can’t be reached with your soapy water or vinegar mixture.
Once your cooler has been cleaned and shut down, close off your vents and cover your cooler with a non-plastic cover to protect your cooler and prevent condensation damage.
That’s it! Your swamp cooler’s final cleaning of the season is an important step in keeping it running great for years to come, so please don’t skip it.
