That "New Pad Smell": What is it, and is it harmful?

New Pad Smell. Chances are, you’ve encountered it if you’ve used an evaporative cooler. What causes it, and is it harmful? We’re frequently asked about this at the beginning of cooler season, as people change out their pads for spring start-up.

Much like a new car or new clothes, new media does have an aroma, but this typically wears off within a few days and is completely harmless. Our universal rigid media kits are GREENGUARD Gold Certified. This is the strictest chemical emissions testing classification, which was formerly known as GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification. This ensures that products are safe for sensitive individuals, such as children and the elderly. Products bearing this certification are acceptable for use in schools and healthcare facilities.

This means that you can rest easy, knowing that your media was designed with the safety of you and your family in mind.

While the smell is noticeable on initial pad installation, it tends to dissipate quickly. It may help to rinse the pads and flush the water from the cooler more frequently in the beginning. This will accelerate the “breaking in” period of the pads. Once the pads are broken in, the smell usually goes away.

We’re here to help, should you have questions about your rigid media pads. Our Customer Service Team is available Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 5:30 pm CST. Give them a call at 800-643-8341.
