Decisions, Decisions: The Differences in Evaporative Cooling Media

While many of these decisions are insignificant, larger ones can have a major impact on your life and well-being. Decisions made for the home make an impact on only you, but also the lives of your family and even your pets. One of the largest decisions to make for your home is how to keep it cool once the temperatures begin to rise.

Certain regions in the United States have a home cooling option that is not only energy-efficient, it’s environmentally-friendly. Evaporative cooling does not rely on chemicals like air conditioning, and an evaporative cooler requires just a third of the energy consumed by a standard air conditioner. That decision is an easy one!

Once you’ve decided on the method of cooling your home, there are a few more options to consider. Evaporative coolers are designed to be mounted in various locations around the house (the side, the roof, window units, etc.). One of the major decisions to make up front is the choice of material (or, the “pad”) that will be wetted so the system will work. They are used to introduce water vapor into hot, arid spaces. The water vapor absorbs the heat and cools the air around it. The saturation level of the pads indicates their efficiency; by increasing the saturation, the structure can be cooled an additional 5 to 8 degrees Fahrenheit. The two major types of pads are Aspen pads and rigid media. This choice needs to be an early decision, as the types of pads are not interchangeable.

Aspen pads are comprised of aspen wood shavings. They are typically replaced at the beginning of every season the evaporative cooler is in use. They generally have a saturation level of around 75%. While they are effective, those looking for higher efficiency and pads that last longer than one season might consider a unit that uses rigid media.

Rigid media can last several years with proper maintenance. It is typically offered in an 8-inch size and a 12-inch size. Depending on the size you decide to use, rigid media offers saturation levels up to 80% and 90%. What does this mean for you? Increased saturation levels can lower fan speeds, which will result in less energy consumption. Higher levels may also reduce stress on the cooler’s motor, as it will not need as much water to effectively cool.
