Earth Day is April 22, 2018. It began in 1970 as a movement to bring awareness of the dangerous levels of toxins in the environment. Earth Day has since grown into a global event, with more than 1 billion people taking part in activities in nearly 200 countries. People have joined together to become more conscious of how their activities affect the environment and take steps to lessen their impact.
Staying cool becomes a priority as temperatures climb. This is especially true in areas like the Southwestern United States, where daytime temperatures regularly top 100 degrees Fahrenheit. HVAC systems are one of the biggest contributors to our environmental issues. It takes a massive amount of energy to keep an air conditioner running, and the ozone-depleting chemicals found in refrigerants have only been regulated in the past 7 years. While it is definitely a start in the right direction, the overall environmental and financial costs are still high.
Certain areas of the United States have an environmentally friendly cooling alternative that saves both energy and money. Evaporative cooling does not use the dangerous chemicals found in air conditioning systems – it only needs water. Evaporative coolers use approximately a third of the energy required to run an air conditioner. This reduces demand on non-renewable fossil fuel energy resources. It also results in considerably lower electric bills for those who use them!
